Seamlessly integrating past and present in café design

Introduction

Bringing a slice of nostalgia to the modern landscape, Daya is embarking on an exciting project to transform a space in Qatar into a traditional Malaysian-Singaporean café. The vision is to recreate the 70s and 80s charm of old coffee shops, the cherished childhood spots many fondly remember, and seamlessly integrate them into a contemporary setting. This project is about more than just design; it’s about evoking emotions and memories.

At a glance

  • Nostalgic transformation: Daya aims to recreate the charm of 70s and 80s Malaysian-Singaporean coffee shops, blending them seamlessly into a modern setting in Qatar.
  • Creative and practical design solutions: The design utilizes curvilinear forms for smooth flow, custom-made furniture, and an open kitchen concept to enhance both aesthetics and functionality.
  • Dynamic dining experience: The open kitchen allows patrons to engage with the culinary process, while outdoor seating blends the nostalgic interior with a classic tuck shop's breezy, open-air atmosphere.

Challenge

The task is daunting given the spatial constraints of fitting a comfortable layout for 50-70 people while prioritizing kitchen efficiency and cost optimization. The challenge lies in making an old inspiration relevant today, ensuring that every detail, from layout to design elements, evokes the essence of those cherished childhood coffee shops. Additionally, the goal is to create a kitchen that allows chefs to work comfortably and efficiently, with equipment arranged under one hood and close to each other for a seamless workflow.

Solution

The solution was a meticulous blend of creativity and practicality. The design embraced curvilinear forms to ensure smooth flow and natural movement throughout the space. Custom-made furniture was crafted to fit perfectly within the angles and curves, enhancing both aesthetics and functionality. The open kitchen concept was prioritized, making it a central feature that allows patrons to witness the culinary magic, creating a dynamic and engaging dining experience.

Nostalgic elements like checkered floors, wooden fans, green and red accents, and the integration of wood and bamboo brought an immediate connection to the past. Ceramic furniture added a touch of elegance and continuity with the old-world charm. Additionally, the café features outdoor seating, blending the interior’s nostalgic vibe with the breezy, open-air atmosphere of a classic tuck shop. This project aims to create a space that fits seamlessly into a modern, efficient framework while evoking the essence of those cherished childhood coffee shops.
